When people get older, they tend to develop skin discoloration or brown spots that are called hyperpigmentation, chloasma, or melasma. The leading cause of these brown spots is unprotected exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The brown spots caused by sun damage is commonly known as liver spots, age spots, solar lentigo, or senile freckle. These blemishes are range in color light brown to red or black.

In women, skin blemishes can sometimes be caused by birth-control pills, pregnancy, or estrogen replacement therapy. This discoloration is known as pregnancy masking or hormone masking.

The common cause of skin discoloration or hyperpigmentation is an excess production of melanin. Melanin is a pigment that gives skin its color. It’s produced by skin cells called melanocytes.


Many products on the market help to lighten the skin, however, what works for others might not work for you. Everybody’s skin is different, so you need to experiment. One of the most common ingredients that help to reduce skin discoloration is hydroquinone. Other ingredients that can help lighten skin are vitamin C, arbutin, or azelaic acid.

Another ingredient that also helps with lightening dark spots of the skin is retinoids.

Whichever products you choose to help lighten your skin, it would take a few months before you see any results.

However, the most crucial step to remember is never to forget putting on sunscreen, as the sun is the leading cause of skin discoloration. It will help to prevent your skin from getting further damage from the sun. It is recommended that you should use a sunscreen with at least the SPF of 15.
